Glossary
Below is a list of common construction/agricultural equipment, with their descriptions and images for reference.
Earthmover
An Earthmover is a generic term for any machine that excavates, moves, lifts, loads or shapes ground or material.
Tractor
Tractor is a term used for any machine with tracks or wheels that is used in the construction industry or agriculture applications.
Bulldozer
A Bulldozer, also referred to as a 'Cat' , is a track type tractor that has a attached blade or ground engaging tool for pushing earth, debris, or any material. Typically for preliminary surface grading, shaping and demolishing structures. Typically used when material needs to be moved short distances, as in cuts and fills, or clearing applications.
Wheel Loader
A wheel loader, also referred to as a Loader, Skip Loader, Pay loader, Frontend Loader....a wheeled machine used to scoop and load or handle material of any nature and transfer to stockpiles, trucks or hopers and conveyor belts.
Crawler Loader
Crawler Loader, also refered to as a track loader because of the track type bottom; basically it is a wheel loader on tracks with out the articulating frame of the wheel loader.
Excavator
Excavator, also refered to as; track hoe, or hydraulic hoe; a machine consisting of a boom, and stick or dipper that has a bucket or hammer attachment on the end which is attached to a rotating " house" which includes the operators compartment, engine and hydraulic pumps. This unit is used to excavate, dig and load material, also used to have attachments on end, like a hydraulic hammer, or grapple. The versitility of this unit also lends itself to crane and lifting applications.
Motorgrader
Motorgrader, also known as; road grader, motor patrol, blade, is a machine used primarily to fine grade or provide a final flat surface of earth or material prior to road building or level surfacing. This machine is equippend with a long blade that can be angled and tilted to facilitae proper grading of material. Also is known to be equipped with a ripper attachment on rear or scrarifier mid mounted of unit.
Compactors
Compactors, also refered to as; rollers, used to compact soil or material in road building. Most compactors have a vibratory fuction to aid in the compaction quality. There are many different configurations of this machine; single drum, double drum, smooth drum, padfoot or sheepsfoot drum, as well as pnematic for asphalt road finishing. Also chopper drum for landfill applications.
Soil Stabilizer
Soil Stabilizer, also known as mixer...used to mix lime or flyash into soil prior to compaction application to further enhance compaction requirements for project specifications.
Scraper
Scraper, also known as pans, can be both self propelled with one or two engines with open bowl designs, or pulled behind a agriculture style tractor in single or dual fashion. These machines also can be fitted with an elevator with tabs or paddles to facilitate the loading of the bowl of loose material on their own...know as Self Loading, Elevating or Paddle Wheel Scrapers.
Off Road Trucks
Off Road Trucks; these units a basically a heavier version of the on the road variety with the exception that they are much heavier built and designed for rough terrain. They can be rigid frame design as well as articulating frame models.
